A weekend well spent

A weekend well spent

A completely free weekend. No plans, no commitments and absolutely nowhere you have to be.

Sounds wonderful, doesn't it?

Although somehow those rare empty weekends have a habit of disappearing into washing, food shopping and all the little jobs we've been putting off.

So we're making a case for occasionally abandoning the to-do list and doing something simply because we fancy it.

A beautiful place to escape to, a proper bookshop and some exceptionally good chocolate. Here are three things we'd happily make time for.

The escape:

If your idea of a good weekend involves beautiful countryside, wonderful food and absolutely no pressure to do anything particularly productive, The Newt in Somerset might be just the place.

Set within a magnificent country estate, it's somewhere to slow down and enjoy your surroundings.

Think long walks through the gardens, wandering past the orchards and sitting down to a lovely lunch made with seasonal ingredients grown on the estate.

And if you fancy making a proper weekend of it, there's the rather gorgeous hotel too.

The sort of place where you arrive with every intention of exploring and then discover that sitting somewhere beautiful with a glass of wine is actually a perfectly good plan.

The bookshop:

There are bookshops, and then there's Daunt Books.

Its beautiful Marylebone shop is one of those places where you can happily lose an entire afternoon.

We're particularly fond of the idea of going in with absolutely no idea what you want to read and simply seeing what catches your eye.

Perhaps something you've been meaning to read for ages. Perhaps a novel recommended by a friend. Or perhaps a book about somewhere you'd rather like to visit.

The only real danger is going in for one book and leaving with three.

Although, frankly, we can think of worse problems.

The treat:

And finally, something delicious.

Pump Street Chocolate makes beautiful bean-to-bar chocolate in Suffolk, using carefully sourced cocoa and traditional chocolate-making methods.

Originally known for its bakery in the pretty coastal village of Orford, Pump Street has brought that same attention to ingredients and craftsmanship to its chocolate.

The range includes some wonderfully interesting combinations, including its Brown Bread chocolate, alongside beautifully made single-origin bars.

Exactly the sort of thing we'd buy as a little treat for someone else and then seriously consider keeping for ourselves.

No judgement here.

Here's to doing a little less

The nicest weekends aren't necessarily the busiest ones.

Sometimes it's enough to go somewhere beautiful, find a book you can't wait to start or sit down with something delicious and enjoy having absolutely nothing else to do.

And you certainly don't need to fit all three into one weekend.

Just make a little time for something you really enjoy.

The washing can probably wait.
